Our Vision

To enable early and accurate diagnosis of type 1 diabetes and celiac disease for all children.

Identify kids at higher risk before symptoms occur.

Identify kids at higher risk before symptoms occur.

Arm families with knowledge.

One step closer to having this available for all children.

Arm families with knowledge.

One step closer to having this available for all children.

How It Works:

  • After you enroll your child, we will use the leftover sample from WA State Newborn Screening. This means no blood draw, no cost, and no appointment for you! This initial test looks for markers for future type 1 diabetes and celiac disease risk.

  • Based on your child’s results, our team will estimate your child’s risk for type 1 diabetes and celiac disease. We will share this risk estimate with you.

  • Most kids won’t be at increased risk. However, if your child is at increased risk, you will be invited into the follow-up study. The follow-up includes taking new samples for continued monitoring and education about symptoms. This is provided at no cost by the study.

About Type 1 Diabetes and Celiac Disease

About Type Diabetes and Celiac Disease

What is Type 1 Diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune disease that attacks the insulin cells in the pancreas. Insulin works like a key to help sugar get into the cells of the body to be used for energy. People with type 1 diabetes cannot make their own insulin and must take insulin every day.

About 1 in 300 children get type 1 diabetes.

What is Celiac Disease?

Celiac is an auto-immune disease that attacks the lining of the small intestine. This causes problems with absorbing nutrients. People with celiac disease must stay on a special gluten-free diet.

About 1 in 100 children get celiac disease.

The best defense is early detection.

Celiac disease and type 1 diabetes are common childhood diseases. Yet both are often not found until severe problems occur. Our initial screening identifies kids at increased risk. With your permission, we use a leftover sample from WA State Newborn Screening, so no new blood draw is needed for initial testing.

We want to arm families with knowledge.

By teaching families how to identify symptoms, we can catch these diseases earlier, hopefully before the child experiences any severe symptoms.

Each child screened takes us one step closer.

Most people will find out their child is not at an increased risk for type 1 diabetes or celiac disease. This may be reassuring to you and still helps our research. Every child screened helps screened helps researchers to better understand how to make this testing part of routine health care.
